Giving Our Library A Voice Through Social Media!

One of the most impactful ways we can connect to our communities from the library is through social media. Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook are the places members of our community are found. It is important for us to have a voice within multiple platforms so we can meet everyone in the diverse places they are and to be able to share the stories, celebrations and wonderful opportunities libraries provide.

When we look at the Future Ready Librarian Framework we find lots of places social media fit. 

Social media gives us an outlet to inspire and support the reading lives of both students and teachers....and families too.

Social media gives us a place to share the resources we are curating and gather new ones; explain and highlight how we are building instructional partnerships; and celebrate how our students are being empowered as creators.

Social media is one of best ways to cultivate community partnerships by giving us a platform to cultivate these partnerships and meet everyone in lots of different places.  It also gives us a window to what others are doing in the community too.

Social media provides us with a space that promotes inquiry, creativity, collaboration and community.  It provides a place we can connect with our community 24/7 in all sorts of situations. 

And social media gives us a way to lead beyond the library by providing us with a space to foster a culture of collaboration and innovation to empower teachers and learners within not only our library, but throughout the community and world too. 

As Jessica and I get ready to kick off a new year in our library, we are using the summer to get the various Van Meter Library Voice social media accounts back up and running to connect with our families, teachers, students and others. 

This is a very important part of building the community we want to create and can't wait to include our students in the process and stories we share throughout the year.
