Doll-E & Shandra McCloskey Visit The Van Meter 2nd Graders!

Today, we had a very special Skype with our new friend, author and illustrator,
Shanda McCloskey and our 2nd graders in the library.
Shanda is the amazing author and illustrator of one of our favorite books of 2018....Doll-E 1.0!
In fact, this is Shandra's debut book...
... and we loved listening to her read it to us. As she read, she shared fun little things about the characters and happenings throughout the book.
When she was done reading, Shandra drew Bluetooth,
 and Doll-E.
You will find the directions on how to draw Doll-E and Blutooth here...
... on her site to share with your kids so they can draw them.
When she was done with the first two characters, one of the boys came up and asked her to draw...
...Charolette too!
She is adorable and one cool girl!

And Shanda, super cool too.  :)   Thank you so much for Skyping into Van Meter, Iowa from your home.  We all loved having you visit to share your book, upcoming projects and your "why" as an author.  It was fascinating, inspiring and lots of fun.

We hope you come back soon!
You can read more about DOLL-E 1.0 in my post, A STEM-Friendly Tale of a Girl and Her Doll....Doll-E 1.0 here

Josh Funk & His Virtual Visit To Our Students In Iowa!

Last week, we had the honor of having one of our favorite authors,
Josh Funk, visit the Van Meter kindergarteners and...
...my sister Heather's students in Amana, Iowa.
Josh was amazing as he talked about writing and how he became an author.
He even answered questions from our kindergarteners and Heather's kids in Amana.  This is always one of our favorite parts!
And one of my favorite parts was when Josh read Lost in the Library, which is one of our favorite new library books.

It was an amazing Skype!  Everyone loved it so much.
Now, I just have to show you Josh's website!

It is amazing! You will find it here too.
On his site, there is a page just for kids filled with....
 Character Cards,
Book Trailers,
Play Book Songs,
 Activity Kits and Coloring Pages,
 Activity Kits filled with...
 ...so much fun for our....
 ...learners, readers,
classroom teachers and librarians.
We especially love the Lost in the Library Activity Kit since this is the one Josh read to us during his Skype visit.
One last thing....You must check out Josh's Resources for Writers where he has developed 12 lessons for writing picture books.  These are all so awesome and will be super helpful and meaningful to our young writers.

Thank you Josh for visiting our libraries and inspiring our students and teachers.  YOU are amazing, my friend!  We can't wait until you visit again!

Creating AWESOME Business Cards In Buncee!

As I get ready to head off to London for the BETT Conference at the end of the week, I want to make sure I am ready to make connections and new friendships so I turned to Buncee to create fresh new very special business cards!

It is quick and easy to make business cards using Buncee especially with the new template feature and so many wonderful, eye catching choices.

Let me show you how to create them too!
Log into Buncee and select Business Cards from the 3.0 version.
There are many template choices for Buncee or you can create your own.
Since I wanted a square business card (something different that will stand out), I chose the Square from Select Canvas Size. It will automatically resize your Buncee when you click on Apply.
For us, as librarians, there are TONS of really awesome background and other assets under the Library categories.  In fact, whatever your job or interests might be, there are designs for everything in Buncee.

First, I picked a Background from the Library category.
Then I started adding the other assets from the Library category by searching for items such as me to...
...create a really fun business card with a cute side including Buncee Man and....
...a side with all of my important information.

As you can see, there are so many stickers, backgrounds, and other assets that will make you shine in your business card.
After my design was complete in Buncee, I went to Vista Print where I uploaded the two sides to create my business cards.  There is even a killer deal right now from Vista Prints too!

I can't wait to take my new business cards to BETT and then onto FETC, TCEA, NCCE and many other places this year.

I hope that you have fun creating and sharing your new business cards in Buncee too.

Let's Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day With These Books, Songs & Resources!

On January 21, 2019 we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  He was born on January 15, 1929.
As we remember all that Martin Luther King Jr. did this week, there are lots of wonderful books, songs, sites and other resources that are perfect to use with all of our students and communities.
I have brought these resources together in the Martin Luther King Jr. Collection by Destiny that you will find here if you are from Van Meter, and here if you are outside of our school.
Within the Collection, you will find a Martin Luther King Jr. Symbaloo that contains a recording of his I Have A Dream Speech, links to the MLK Jr. PebbleGo and PebbleGo Next articles, several eBooks from Capstone Interactive and EPIC! Books, a wonderful video from BrainPop, and one of my favorite things.....
...this special story and song, Peaceful Leader Martin Luther King Jr., from Cantata Learning.
I added a link to the eBook within Capstone Interactive for Van Meter and included the YouTube video too.  Our students love Cantata...I can't wait until they hear this one.
We always make sure our students can find these new Symbaloo's on our main elementary one by placing it towards the top.  They will find the Martin Luther King Symbaloo and Collection where it is circled above.
I also wanted to make sure I mentioned one of my favorite picture books about Martin Luther King Jr.  It is from our friends at Capstone and called When Martin Luther King Jr. Wore Roller Skates.  We have this one in Capstone Interactive so all of our students and teachers will be able to read and listen to it this week.

You will also find it here on the Capstone site.
Make sure you check out this fun STEM Challenge from Maker Maven, Can You Build A Podium For Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr? too!  You will find it here

And please let me know what else we should add.  I am happy to add to both the Collection and Symbaloo so all of us can use these important resources at our school too.
