Girls Who Code Van Meter! We Are Excited About Our New Chapter & Where This Will Take Our Girls!

One of my favorite things about being a teacher and librarian is working with our students on the things they are passionate and excited about learning and experiencing.  Coding is one of those things.  After introducing coding to all of our students throughout the year and with events such as Hour of Code, we were excited to have the opportunity to kick off something very special at Van Meter.
It is Girls Who Code!
Girls Who Code offers free after-school programs for 3rd-5th and 6th-12 grade girls to join our sisterhood of supportive peers and role models using computer science to change the world.

The core values of sisterhood, code and impact truly makes this group special and unique, and something we want to bring our girls.
My friends and colleagues Megan Algreen, Kate Lamoureux, Abby Tibbetts and myself are excited to co-lead this group of amazing girls from Van Meter.
For the last five weeks, we have met for a hour after school on Wednesdays to participate in the wonderful activities and curriculum laid out by Girls Who Code....
...and through other activities we've the opportunity to participate in including a great visit from three Iowa State Univeristy Computer Science students interested in pursuing careers involving coding and....
...Adam Bellow from BreakoutEDU who shared his story and answered lots of great questions around coding, computer science and entrepreneurship.
You can learn more about Girls Who Code and start your own club here too!

This is just the start of our Girls Who Code Clubs and we can't wait to see what next year and the future brings to our girls!
