"Let's Move" Comics....A Collaborative Project With PE To Celebrate Digital Learning Day

Last week to celebrate Digital Learning Day, our elementary PE Bart Jones came to me with a GREAT idea.  He wanted to take the information found on the "Let's Move" website and have the students create comics as a "take away" from what they were learning during his classes each day.
Let's Move is the health initiative launched by First Lady, Michelle Obama.  It promotes health, activity, and a way of living that will create a healthier generation of kids.

Bart gave me the information that he was covering with all of the students and I then drew a storyboard for them to use when creating their comics.
We talked about what tools they could use to create their comics.  We have ComicLife on our MacBooks that they love using so this would be one choice.  I also added a few online comic creators to the Van Meter 5th Grade Symbaloo.
Comic Master, Graphic Novel Creator and Make Beliefs Comixs were the two on the Symbaloo....The 5th graders were so excited to try these out.
I was also super excited to find PowToon in the Edmodo App Store last week.
I have wanted to try this out with the students for awhile and now with the app available within the Edmodo App Store, I was able to give access to all of the students within their "Van Meter 5th Grade Technology" Edmodo Group.  This is another perfect tool for this project.
And the really cool thing....There is a special introductory special for PowToon in Edmodo right now.  You can purchase it for your Group for $15.00, instead of the regular $75.00.
As I walked around the library, it was so much fun seeing all of the different tools they were using.

A lot of students chose to use ComicMaster, especially the ones that wanted the graphic novel type feel to their work.
They saved them within the Van Meter Library account.  I bet a lot of them went back into them tonight when they went home.  They loved using it.
Several of the students also tried out PowToon.  I was so excited to see this being used and watching the different steps they took to create their comics.  They saved these right into their own PowToon accounts within Edmodo.
Of course we also had a few amazing ComicLife comics!  I love seeing what Harrison and Sam created.  They were sitting by each other and taking pictures to show the five steps that they were to outline within their comic. It is going to be so much fun to see these when they are complete.
They loved today and will finish their "Let's Move" Comics on Friday.  The 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be creating these throughout the week.  We can't wait to share them with all of you.

Just another fun way to celebrate Digital Learning Day everyday!  :)

  1. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful project. It really shows the value of collaboration and the importance of our library media specialists. I have emailed the link to my administrators in hopes that continued cuts to our K-2 school library will stop. I follow so many teacher-librarians on twitter. You are all so very smart, and it is clear you are the center of your schools, and so are your libraries!

And your school is SUPER lucky to have you advocating for the importance of school librarians to your children, teachers, and community.

      Have a wonderful day, Shannon
