Leadership Day 2013....How To Be A Leader With Digital Technologies

Today my good friend Scott McLeod is celebrating the 7th anniversary of his blog Dangerously Irrelevant. This week Scott wrote....

"August 15 is the 7th anniversary of my blog. So, once again, I’m inviting everyone who’s interested to help me celebrate by participating in Leadership Day 2013!
Over the past 6 years, we’ve had over 400 Leadership Day posts.
I hope you will join us for this important day because, I promise you, if the leaders don’t get it, it’s not going to happen."
Today, my colleague and friend Janelle Thompson and I decided to write a post together.  She is an instructional strategist at Van Meter and has also taught 5th grade here for the last 8 years.  We work together a lot and have learned so much from one another.

How To Be A Leader With Digital Technologies

Use your Teacher Librarian!!!

The teacher librarian is the person in your school that can support you the most. Collaborate with them and find out what your needs are.  Then make it your goal to learn one thing at a time and integrate it as you go just as teachers would.  Get into the libraries and classrooms to see what the teacher librarians are teaching the students....You can learn a lot just by watching what happens here and from the students.  When there are special events in the library (author Skype’s, Dot Day, Poetry Summit), visit and see what this is all about.  It is fun to connect to these events through technology.

Check out the the work that the Iowa Department of Education Task Force For Teacher Librarians has done this year.

Gain the Access!

Do whatever it takes to find the money to purchase technology.  Even if you have to start small. Think creatively, write grants, ask your parent groups, take part in pilot programs.  Give open access to your students and staff. Don’t forget to include a great digital citizenship curriculum along with this access.  It’s more than having the tool, you need to have adequate broadband, servers, etc...

What is the tool you can’t live without?
If you are a connected educator the device doesn’t matter. Use the Device that works for you.

Where do we need new knowledge?
Instructional technology is not just using tech but using it as a tool for students to create new knowledge.

Ineffective technology leadership
“I’m old school”  You can’t possibly be old school and teach young minds. You have to know the world around us and technology is a major part of our world today.  Technology allows us to give students the opportunities of the world not just their little corner of it.
Thank you Scott for letting us have a voice on this day too!
