Using Biblionasium To Foster Digital Citizenship Skills and Conversations Through Reading

One of my favorite places to go with our readers is Biblionasium

As shared on the site,

Biblionasium is the fun, reading-focused social network for kids ages 6-13. Connecting kids in an encouraging community of friends, family and their educators, Biblionasium excites, engages and encourages a love of the written word. Kids can log their reading, play games, complete reading challenges and earn rewards within a safe social network built especially for them.

In fact, one of my favorite things about Biblionasium is how it gives me a place to have wonderful and meaningful conversations around digital citizenship with my students and gives them practice in their very own social network safe for all readers.

This week, as we celebrate Digital Citizenship Week, I am using Biblionasium with our students, teachers and families.  After all, as a digital sharing platform, Biblionasium is built on a foundation of digital citizenship. As the "Goodreads for Kids", they are providing a safe and controlled social network where students can rate, review and recommend books to their classmates.

...you will find a Video Overview, Presentation, Lesson Plan and Printable Pledge.
I love starting off with the video as I teach the students about digital citizenship. It is a great way to highlight Biblionasium, while tying in these important skills we want our students to embrace.
From the moment, students log into Biblionasium for the first time, they are reminded about how important it is to be a good digital citizen.

They are asked to sign the Biblionasium Honor Code, which you will find in this blog post.
And the lesson, Being a Good Digital Citizen on Biblionasium is terrific! It gives not lesson ideas, but important vocabulary and questions to teach students about too.

As you celebrate Digital Citizenship Week, think about how important it is to practice and put these skills into action within classrooms, libraries and homes as our students learn how to navigate the digital world.
