My book of the day is one that I cannot wait to share in the library this fall.
It is called The Breaking News and is written and illustrated by the amazing Sarah Lynne Reul.
You can visit Sarah's website to learn more about her and the beautiful work she creates here.
I first saw The Breaking News at a little bookstore in Chicago last week and couldn't wait for it to arrive to spend more time with it.
As described inside,
When devastating news rattles a young girl's community, her normally attentive parents and neighbors are suddenly exhausted and distracted. At school, her teacher tells the class to look for the helpers--the good people working to make things better in big and small ways. She wants more than anything to help in a BIG way, but maybe she can start with one small act of kindness instead . . . and then another, and another.Small things can compound, after all, to make a world of difference.
The Breaking News by Sarah Lynne Reul touches on themes of community, resilience, and optimism with an authenticity that will resonate with readers young and old.
You can see from the illustrations how Sarah captures the emotion of both the adults and children when they receive some bad news.
This will open up opportunities for you and your students to have conversations about breaking news...
...or sad, scary and often time shocking news within our world and communities too.
It will also give readers hope in dealing with news together as the sweet family does in this book.
Don't see this picture book as just a book to use with young learners. The Breaking News can be used with older students as a great way to start important conversations about news too.
Thank you Sarah for sharing this story with all of us.
You can read more about The Breaking News here on Sarah's site.
