Eclipse Books, Projects, Apps, Interactive Maps, a New Collection and More!

When we were on vacation in San Francisco, Eric's Aunt Elaine gave Hagan and I these super cool glasses she picked up for the eclipse which will take place on August 21, 2017.
As I looked closer, I was excited to see they were from Google!
In fact, Google is planning something very special for the total eclipse.  It is called the Eclipse Megamovie 2017 and is sponsored by Google and Berkeley University of California.
You can read all about the project here

If you go to the Eclipse Megamovie 2017 site here, you will find the things you need and so much more.
First off, you can learn what a solar eclipse is and...
...the best places to watch it throughout the United States.

One of the coolest things on the site is the Simulator.
You enter the place you want to look up and it will locate it according to Google Maps. The Simulator will tell you the timing of the eclipse in that specific location.

Hagan and I looked up our house in West Des Moines, Iowa to see what time we could see the eclipse and...
...at our Denver, Colorado house too.
It is really cool to look up a few of the locations that will have a total eclipse too.

Can you see the difference?
On the site, there is a wealth of resources for all of us to use for the eclipse.

You will find Eclipse Activities for Educators including...
 NASA Eclipse,
 NASA Night Sky Network and...
this amazing book from NSTA Press called Solar Science...Exploring Sunspots, Seasons, Eclipses, and More.

When I found this book, I decided to pull together all of the books about eclipses into one place.
Brianna and I created two Pinterest Boards full of Eclipse Books for Middle and Young Adults and...
Eclipse Picture Books.
Two of my new favorites are from Capstone.

Eclipses by Martha E. H. Rustad is a PebblePlus for our youngest readers and...
... Exploring Eclipses by Jill Sherman is perfect for grades 3-6.
My friend, Andy Plemmons, also crowdsourced a wonderful list of books too.  You can find that here.

Please let us know if there are any we missed!

You will also find Websites and Online Guides,
 Interactive Maps and Eclipse Photography.
As you plan your eclipse activities for August 21, 2016 refer to the website, Pinterest Boards,
The Eclipse Megamovie Project on Facebook
and by following NASA on Twitter and the hashtag #Eclipse.
You will also want to download the Eclipse Megamovie Mobile Total Solar Eclipse 2017 app.
My friend Barbara also shared this awesome Symbaloo with me that is filled with eclipse resources too.  You will find it here.
And of course...don't forget your safety glasses that you MUST wear to view the eclipse.  On the site, you will find information and places to purchase yours.
Also, I pulled all of these resources and a few more into a Collection from Destiny. This is the best way to pull together resources like this, along with books, eBooks, databases and other things into one place for your students and teachers.

You will find the Solar Eclipse Collection here.   And for those of you who are Destiny users, you can create your very own Solar Eclipse Collection for your school and students too.

I can't wait to see what you do to celebrate the eclipse!  Please feel free to share in the comments section of this post.

  1. We are celebrating by GOING to see totality! Somewhere in TN. I am missing teacher prep days and the first two days of school, but my husband insists it's a once in a lifetime experience. (And I don't even remind him that we did this already in Baja California, so this is technically twice in a lifetime!) It really is an amazing experience!
