t is almost time for Read for the Record Day.....and a very special surprise!
On October 3rd, we will all be reading, sharing, and loving Loren Long's Otis. This sweet, beautifully illustrated book of friendship is a special favorite of Van Meter and at our house. I grew up on a farm in eastern Iowa so I am especially drawn to the characters and setting.
On this day we pledge to read the official Read for the Record book at Van Meter while others are reading the same book around the world. We read within our school and have connected to several other students and teachers, while authors and illustrators have joined us to read too.
Last year in 2012, 2.3 million participated in Read for the Record.
Yesterday, a very special event was announced on the We Give Books newsletter.
After speaking to Loren and the people involved in Read for the Record Day, I suggested that he do a Google Hangout to connect with students and schools around the country to celebrate the day.
I was so excited to see that he was going to do this and that five schools were going to have the opportunity to connect with Loren on Read for the Record Day!

Win a Chance to Read Otis with Author Loren Long on Read for the Record Day!

Ever wanted to read with the author of a children’s book? Now is your chance! New York Timesbestselling author Loren Long will read his heartwarming story of the lovable tractor Otis on Read for the Record Day in a Google+ Hangout on Air. On October 3 at 12:00 PM EDT, Long will join millions as we read to set a world record for the largest shared reading experience. Five lucky classrooms will be able to talk directly with Long in a live video chat. To enter a chance to read with Long, simply pledge to read during Jumpstart’s Read for the Record at We Give Books now through September 25.* We invite everyone to join the Google+ Hangout on Air and read with Long on October 3, but only five classrooms will get the chance to interact with Long directly during Read for the Record.
Have a question for Long? We can ask him during the Google+ Hangout on Air. Submit it via Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #ImwithOtis. The winning classrooms will be notified no later than September 27.

How fun will that be!
I also love how We Give Books, a free digital reading initiative created by Penguin and the Pearson Foundation, gets involved with Read for the Record. As in years past, the record breaking book is available online for free at We Give Books.
This gives everyone access to the selected book online. I always love sharing the link to the book with our families and with others too. It is fun for everyone to read this special book each year.
